How to (easily) get a kickass job through eLitmus?

by on October 6, 2015

Update (20th March 2016)

As this post is now top ranking on Google for anything eLitmus, we get a lot of request for guidance/help in prepration for the interview ,once you are well past the eLitmus examination stage and have actual calls.

Well, Jatin decided to do a write up as back in the day, that guy did have his own implementation of a spiral binder with his own questions to prepare for any interview. He has decided to share that PDF for you guys to refer to, how cool is that? Let us know if it helps.

Check@ The best resource to prepare for a Software Engineering interview | Fresher Edition 😎

Hi, guys, you must be aware of the eLitmus exam that provides (decent) jobs to engineers (including me) 😀 . As of now, in 2015, overall 1100+ positions were opened up on the eLitmus platform across 46+ companies and 400+ jobs with salary > 4 LPA! Ain’t that cool? No! It doesn’t matter whether your college is 1-tier, 2-tier, 3-tier or even (5n+1)^n! tier; you will get your shot if you’ve scored well in eLitmus and if you know your shit you might as well crack it.

the best strategy to crack eLitmus

eLitmus troops

Before we dive deep in, let me tell you how I came to know about eLitmus in my last year of Engineering.

Well, on one fine night 😛 , I decided to close my routine tabs and started searching for “jobs portal in India“,”engineering jobs India“, “how to get software jobs India” etc. Google was giving the same shit about Naukri, Monster, Shine etc. I hopelessly searched again, this time on Quora, there some guy mentioned about the eLitmus test. Eureka.

The euphoria soon broke down and after digging on ‘eLitmus’, I also came to know about the toughness level of the test, for the sake of analogy, some folks even relate it to the mighty CAT. Now that’s scary?! So, I geared up and started preparing by doing the smart work, as I didn’t have much time for pure hard work. And despite having a weak maths background (backlog in maths too, shh! don’t tell my employer), I actually managed to get a good score in the test and bagged 2 job offers through eLitmus. (in Bangalore…yay) 😎

Well, that was my story. It time to pass down the legacy to my fellow engineers. And it’s time for another meme.

the best strategy to crack eLitmus

Chris Gardner huh!

The cost of eLitmus test is ₹920 and you can reappear for the test as many times as you want (after paying the fees again, of course). Last 3 scores will be shown to companies.

eLitmus test consists of 3 sections:

#1. Quantitative Aptitude

#2. Data Interpretation, Reasoning, and Problem-solving

#3. Verbal ability

Important stuff

  • Each section has 20 questions and each question carrying 10 marks. So, there are total 20 x 3 = 60 Q and 60 x 10 = 600 marks.
  • All questions will be MCQ types.
  • Syllabus of eLitmus is not defined and the folks at eLitmus suggest us to refer any standard MBA entrance exam material/aptitude material while preparing.
  • But, there are many suggested topics (given below) which are coming on a regular basis in the test 😎
  • Although I’m not responsible if they have suddenly changed the format of the paper and forced you to write a Palindrome program instead 🙄
  • This is just a rough estimate of questions per topic.

Section A: Quantitative Aptitude (200 marks for 20 Q)

  1. Number systems: 4-5 Q

  2. AP GP Series: 1 Q

  3. Averages: 0-1 Q

  4. Percentages: 1 Q

  5. Profit & Loss: 1 Q

  6. Ratio, Proportion and Variation: 0-1 Q

  7. Time and work: 2 Q

  8. Time, Speed and Distance: 2 Q

  9. Geometry: 4-5 Q

  10. Quadratic Equations: 1-2 Q

  11. Logarithms: 1 Q

  12. Permutations and Combinations: 2-3 Q

  13. Probability: 2-3 Q

Section B: Problem-solving (200 marks for 20 Q)

  1. Data Sufficiency problems: 4 Q

  2. Data Interpretation: 4 Q

  3. Crypto arithmetic: 3 Q

  4. Logical Reasoning Puzzles: 9 Q

💡 Attempt crypto problems only if you are really good at it.
Section B is toughest of all 3 sections.

Section C: Verbal Ability (200 marks for 20 Q)

  1. Fill in the blanks: 6 Q

  2. Jumbled paragraph questions: 2 Q

  3. Reading comprehension: 3 para’s with 4Q each -> 12 Q

💡 Try to attempt the shorter 2 para(s) only, you won’t get time for the 3rd para.

You need to score at least 80+ percentile (90+ would be awesome) in all 3 sections to get short-listed for the interview process for most of the companies.

Remember, only percentile will be shown to companies, not marks! So, do a lengthy analyse of the image below for marks and percentile comparison and come up with a good strategy for a number of questions you’re going to solve in each section.

-=Time is the essence here=-

elitmus marks Vs percentile

Analysis.

It’s time to build your own custom strategy now. That’s what Engineers do eh? 😉 But! Hold on chief! Before you close this tab and start creating your strategy, there is something else to spice up things. Yep! The deadly negative marking. Make sure you understand how it works with eLitmus because they do have an interesting algorithm for that. Read on..

eLitmus Negative Marking Scheme

• If you do more than 25% questions wrong of the total attempt then for the rest of every wrong answer half mark will be deducted.

• If you attempt more than 1/4th of total questions wrong then you get negative marking,

• If 12 questions are attempted, and 25%(1/4) questions are wrong i.e. 3 questions are wrong, and 9 are correct, then there is no negative marking. Though, if you answer 8 correct and 4 wrong, negative marks will be for the 4th not for first three.

• Negative markings are section wise not for the complete test.

If you don’t have much time to prepare, then go through the original eLitmus questions from previous tests (questions are likely to repeat!) on m4maths (Register on site to see answers).

 Some More Tips

  • Arun Sharma books (Quantitative Aptitude, Logical reasoning) are advisable for eLitmus preparation.
  • You should keep appearing for eLitmus test till you hit at least 80+ percentile in all 3 sections (trust me it could be the best investment from your side. You would recover this amount on 1st day of job 😉 )
  • Companies hire through eLimtus from June to October-mid. So, you should take the eLitmus test (and score 80+) before June i.e. before your last sem exams! Take it seriously.
  • Please notice that eLitmus score is not the only criteria for getting shortlisted for Interview calls; many companies also look at resume and branch (prefer CSE/IT).
  • Lastly, consider moving to Bangalore (90% of companies which recruit through eLitmus are here) after last semester exams. Even if you couldn’t score good enough, you’ll get a hell of opportunities here. Just get in some pg initially. There are many!

    Hi sir,

I am currently in my final year in B.E (Computer Science) my question to you is that i don’t have any solid knowledge of any programming language but i have done PHP.

1:- Is Elitmus test is still can help me to get a job?
2:- Are the employers of elitmus wants programmers with computer science degree or people like me who are from CS(Don’t have technical skills) but open for non-technical work have a chance too?

I hope you will answer as soon as possible.

    Thankyou sir.

Hello, I found your article very informative. I have completed my BE in 2015 and had worked for 6 months followed by doing a 6 month Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Computing(PG-DAC) from C-DAC. I am now looking for a job and hence want to give the e-Litmus test on 19th March. While I was filling the education details for it, it asked for BE Aggregate %, so do I have to put my final year percentage or 4 years total aggregate percentage ? Please reply.

I have good marks in 10th(85%) and 12th(70%) but my percentage in graduation is 54% only and I have an year back also which means I’ve completed my degree in 5 years instead if 4 years.

Score 85+ percentile in all three sections ….after u get the score apply to the companies….once you get a call from any of the company, either accept it or decline…do not leave it as it is (i.e. Neither accept nor decline) , it leaves bad impression on the recuirter…
you can take maximum benefit of this exam if you are willing to visit Bangalore or live there, because 95% if the IT firms that recruit through e litmus call for interview in Bangalore. Once you get a decent score (practice from elitmuszone.com for PS and Sarvesh k verma For quant) practice a lot from geeks for geeks….(focus on strings and graph)…

After my 12+ I went for B.sc nursing course and I quit that course due to some health issues..but there’s a big problem that most of the MNC don’t hire students with more than 2 years gap. So if i can score there in which companies I can apply and will I get any chance to get a job through elitmus ? Can you please help me because I really need to know it.

Thanks that is very informative article you wrote ! (y)
I have few doubts though would be very thankful to hear from you about those.

How negative marking works ? What exactly is meant by half mark will be deducted after 25% of total attempted ques getting wrong. Is it 0.5 mark or half of marks of attempted question ?
Besides how will it work in verbal section lets say, if i have attempted 14 questions ? 25% of 14 is 3.5 .After how many wrong answers will the negative marking starts ?

Thanks a lot in advance !

      Hi Diksha,

basically the funda of negative marking is that for every 3 CORRECT answers, you have the comfort of doing one question wrong (marks will not be deducted). And negative marking is half of the value of the question. means 5 marks would be deducted per wrong answer.

        Problem Solving -> 26.30 -> 71.98 percentile
        Quantitative -> 40.00 -> 86.91 percentile

I took this exam in April and didn’t thought of moving to Bangalore . Now i think i should move there.

Yes you can get calls even in Oct but chances are better if you prepare and give the exam before that as generally companies hire in jun-july. Better to give it ASAP but do prepare well. Best of Luck 🙂

hey…why didn’t you guys mentioned the boundless competition in elitmus ‘after scoring well’ in exam. You should not misguide kids, tell them in complete detail how companies ‘shortlist’ hundreds of kids for single vacancy. And kindly remove that ‘(easily)’ from the title. Because from my experience here, competition is AT LEAST 1/(10*10), which is even above CAT, GATE etc.

If I were you, I would prepare a nice resume and reply to relevant openings on eLitmus and prepare my core subjects as you should be getting calls soon with that score.

I work in Adobe as a Software Engineer and even I have just 2 programming languages on my resume, which are the ones I am well versed with. Writing a “Hello, World!” program in any language doesn’t make you proficient in it. Does it? 🙂

      Hi Salman,

It should not be relevant but some companies may have their own criteria. However, I will advice you to prepare and go for the examination as there are many startups which may chose you just for your skills not academics.

Sir, each and every company recruiting through elitmus say candidate should have good academic score(as my friends say good=> 60%). Is it so? I have low cgpa of 6.35 upto 7th semester and studying in one of NIT’s. On my grade card it’s written that actual percentage is cgpa-0.5 *10 (i.e for me – 58.5%). Will i get a call from companies? I have elitmus score
    (Quant->95, ProblemSolving->86, Verbal->93)percentile and 10th and 12th greater than 75%.

I suggest you to keep applying as you have a pretty good elitmus score and plus you’re from NIT. Graduation percentage is not the only thing that matters.

Gaurav.. Thanks for this wonderful post.. U gave me a clear view of what elitmus is… Hats off… and my question is…. I’m 2014 passed out and 59.25% in my graduation (BE) ece….sadly, I’m still a fresher….. So if I give it a try and score 90 percentile…. Will it fetch me a job from mnc ‘s(Accenture)..? Or I will be rejected by my BE score and education gap?

    Hello,
My question is if u have a a bad academic record like 50% throughout but you score very well on the ph test say 85-90 percentile.is there any hope of getting a job for such a candidate through elitmus. As I have seen some companies eligibility criteria as just good academics and good ph score and maybe they mention the batch year. My query is will such a candidate get a job if they score at least 85 percentile on the test.

      Hi Harshit,

You are appearing at the perfect sweet spot. Just make sure you prepare and score well. The result is mostly out in a week post which you can start applying for job openings. eLitmus has the most number of job openings in the span of May-August.

Most of the companies provide convenient interview locations but it all depends on the respective opening. You need to have a good grasp of IT concepts as most of the openings in eLitmus are in that sector only. You can go through my latest post to brush up some theoretical skills – http://bitsnapper.com/best-resource-prepare-software-engineering-interview-fresher/

Well, you do need to show those to sit for the examination. You should get the originals from college or maybe carry the xerox with a signed note from college confirming the possession of your original documents.

Not sure if it will help, but you can confirm about the above on eLitmus helpline number here – https://www.elitmus.com/contact_us

She said all her documents are at her home in the other state. She only had Election Card. She was still allowed to give the examination. But she was told to verify the documents within next test date.

I will copy paste same comment as I did to Piyush.

I think you are better off in preparing for GATE than eLitmus as 95% of the jobs here would be for IT background. I firmly believe that one should have his efforts align with his field only. What’s the point of investing 4 years of your life in the field when you are going to abandon it just for a quick fix (Job-Money)?

You should prepare for exams related to Mech and go for hands-on internship in some of the workshops to gain real world experience which will help you way more than anything.

      Just my 2 cents.

      Hi Ramya,
Mostly companies which hire through eLitmus seek out for current batch freshers. But I’ve seen some (good) companies which hire candidates with some experience. So, it would help if you have some exp. in tech domain.

      All the best.
